Speaking to Police

It takes courage speaking to police

Attending a police station

You will generally be served by an officer at the front counter, there may or may not be people sitting in the reception area. You will be asked for Identification (if you have it) and the reason for attending the station.

** The officer serving you needs some basic details of the event; this information is used to connect you with a police officer from the correct department within the station. **

If you feel uncomfortable saying the reason for attending out loud, you can type it into your phone or have it written/typed on a piece of paper. The officer can provide you with pen and paper at the station if needed.

The following information will generally asked-

  • Date of event

  • Address/area of event if known

  • Some very basic information about what happened

  • Name of the offender/ perpetrator (person that harmed you if known)

If you are attending due to sexual assault, a suitably qualified officer will speak with you in a private area. If you have a preference to speak with a male or female officer, this should be made clear when stating the reason for your visit; there maybe a small wait in the reception area for a suitably qualified female officer to become available.

Speaking with an officer

The officer will ask about the events that took place, after a discussion they will be able to provide information on possible next steps.

If you are attending the station to discuss multiple events relating to the same complaint, it may assist you and the officer to have some notes prepared. The below is an example, it’s okay not to know all the information, this gives you a place to start when discussing the complaint with the police officer.
